Social Democrats, USA
Social Democrats, USA (SDUSA) is a social democratic organization in the United States. SDUSA formed in 1972 as the successor to the Socialist Party of America (SPA), which splintered into three: SDUSA; the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee; and the Socialist Party USA. SDUSA describes itself as committed to the broader democratic socialist tradition, but is firmly anti-communist and used "social democrat" rather than "socialist" to disassociate the group from the Soviet Union. SDUSA supports a political realignment strategy which aims to shift the Democratic Party toward social democracy by building a coalition of trade unions, particularly the AFL–CIO, civil rights organizations, and other working-class constituencies. The Socialist Party of America (SPA) was a socialist political party in the United States formed in 1901 by a merger between the three-year-old Social Democratic Party of America and disaffected elements of the Socialist Labor Party of America who had split from the main organization in 1899. In the first decades of the 20th century, the SPA drew significant support from many different groups, including trade unionists, Progressivism, progressive social reformers, Populism, populist farmers and immigrants. Eugene V. Debs twice won over 900,000 votes in presidential elections (1912 United States presidential election, 1912 and 1920 United States presidential election, 1920), while the party also elected two United States House of Representatives, U.S. representatives (Victor L.
